Presentation remarks for Ward Scott's Lifetime Achievement Award

The winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award is someone who retired as this college’s longest serving faculty member. Some labeled him as a “Redneck Hippie” after he used his pet pig to win election as College Senate President – he is a walking contradiction – one who is enamored by both the classroom to develop the mind and the gym to develop the body. He is serious about his views but you can hear his laugh from across the room.
In his nearly 40 years of teaching Ward Scott has challenged his students. The Gainesville Sun honored his teaching in an article entitled “A Class Like No Other.” The article described how students from all over the nation returned to Gainesville to experience one more class with Ward. He also developed a new program called Critical Conflicts to encourage his students to apply classroom ideas to the public arena.
Ward has served on all levels of governance at Santa Fe. . He was on the committee that was instrumental in bringing Pres. Sasser to our college. Throughout his career and especially during his time as Senate President, Ward was one of the college’s staunchest advocates of academic freedom and of shared governance. Ward stood for obtaining additional benefits like fee waivers for our adjunct faculty and overturning the unfair practice of reduced adjunct compensation at the college’s centers.
Ward Scott recently received national recognition at NISOD in Dallas, Texas. At the state level Ward was actively involved with FACC. When the FACC Chief Executive Officer, Harry Albertson, retired, he cited Ward as one of the two most influential faculty members in the state. A few months later Harry almost killed Ward and me in a near boating accident but that is a story for another day.
Ward also served as the President of the statewide Community College Faculty Coalition. At one of the Coalition’s meetings he organized a uniting of forces between Community College faculty, State University faculty, and K-12 union leaders to support a Constitutional Amendment on governance that was approved by Florida’s voters.
Although Ward and I are on opposite ends of the political spectrum, I learned early on that it was best if you could get him on your side. And he has always been on the side of Santa Fe College. We will be opening the doors to its Alachua Center this fall. The opening of this facility represents a dream of Ward’s. He helped in getting the City of Alachua to contribute over $1 million dollars to the project. He also used his influence as Chair of the Economic Advisory Committee to aid the development of a 14 acre enterprise zone by the University of Florida.
To honor his extensive accomplishments and contributions to Santa Fe College and the communities we serve we present the Lifetime Achievement Award to Ward Scott.

The Ward Hog Wins Lifetime Achievement Award from SFC

Ward Scott receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Ward Scott GAINESVILLE – Santa Fe College presented Ward Scott with the Lifetime Achievement Award, its most prestigious recognition, at its April 17 award ceremony. The award is presented to an employee who has consistently gone above and beyond in the performance of his or her duties.
Santa Fe College recognized Scott for bringing about significant positive changes for Santa Fe’s mission. Stating that Scott had utilized highly effective practices to inspire and lead others to contribute constructively to college excellence, Santa Fe college faculty and staff applauded Scott for not only being one of the most influential community college leaders in the state, but also for his unique effort in bringing the Alachua Corporate Training Center to the city of Alachua.
Former students from throughout the country returned to Gainesville to witness Scott’s acceptance of the Lifetime Achievement Award. A significant number of these former students first came to know Scott as their teacher at Gainesville High School, but later studied under him once again as they continued their educations at Santa Fe.
Accepting the award on behalf of the thousands of students that he taught over his 39 year career, Scott said he believes the classroom does not have walls in time or space. Scott proclaimed that a great reward in teaching was mentoring students long after their courses were over. Citing Alachua city manager Clovis Watson, Jr. in the audience as an example, Scott stated that their 30-year relationship inspired the creation of the Alachua Santa Fe campus. Santa Fe College will open in the city of Alachua in the fall of 2009 and immediately begin offering two and four year degrees. The Lifetime Achievement Award honored Scott for his extraordinary leadership in building the relationships necessary to make the Alachua campus a reality.
Throughout his career, Scott was a supporter of faculty matters, and he tackled many issues relative to shared governance, especially during the period her served as the Senate President. He also served on the college Budget Advisory Committee that developed the basic framework for the college’s annual budget allocations, and with Scott’s input, consistently helped establish and identify strategies to maximize the college’s funding.
His involvement in the community with issues related to Alachua County and the City of Alachua range from serving on boards and chairing committees as well as being politically active in county and city commission meetings.

Happy New Year! GO GATORS!! Let's Party!!!

Happy New Year to all in GHS 68. There has been alot to celebrate in the old home town lately. The County finally put up a traffic light way out on Jonesville Road at NW 39th Avenue, neither of which even existed, I suspect, when we were young. The First Baptist Church is even moving out there from downtown. In other local news, THE GATORS ARE NATIONAL BCS CHAMPS!!! And Superman has been sighted recently, indicating he will be around to hammer the bad guys for another year!

So it's a fine time to have a little party. We have reserved a room at the Macaroni Grille for Friday night, January 30, at 6:00. This is a little different than at the Gator's Dockside, so we need your RSVPs in advance if you are coming to make sure they have room for us. Please email Bill at bill.harlan@alumni.duke.edu or Jackie at hoover81@cox.net or 352/332-2516 if you will attend or need information. The restaurant sits on the side of the Oaks Mall in Gainesville that faces Newberry Road. We're looking forward to seeing you!

Classmate News - from Ages Past

Speaking of the Gators, our own Bill Koerner correctly predicted the score of the BCS victory, highly sagacious and in defiance of all the oddsmakers who predicted a much, much higher scoring game. That got several classmates talking about his good luck and how he ought to head for the track. Bill responded, "I've already been there," and told this story from Ages Past about he and Doug Lynes.

Bill recalls, "I remember another time when the numbers were working in my (our) favor.... one more story from days gone by.

During the summer of 1970, Doug and I needed a vacation but were short on funds. At the time my parents owned a cabin in upstate New York, on Brant Lake in the Adirondacks. Brant Lake is located 30 miles or so north of Lake George and we enjoyed the best of both worlds; the beautiful solitude of a remote lakeside cabin, and resort town nightlife in Lake George Village. After a few weeks of hiking and exploring during the day and visiting the Lake George pubs by night, we were running out of money.

On one of our trips to Lake George we ran into a guy I knew from UF. He was working that summer at one of the many resorts that surround Lake George, and told us some of the staff had left before season's end, and they needed some help. Doug bussed tables, and I was a short order cook at the snack bar. We both worked the night shift; not a bad job, and provided funds to keep us in food, gas, and beer.

One day, the guy from UF invited us to go to the horse track at Saratoga. He had some extra club passes, and we got to hang out with the high rollers at the track. Doug and I placed a few bets, and, with the hot dogs and beer, were quickly depleting our cash. Then came "the tip". Someone in our group knew the bugler who plays the call to the starting line. He told us to bet on this horse whose name I cannot recall. The odds against this horse was something like 250 to 1! We went back to the bugler and asked if he was sure about this, and he said yes. Doug and I were tapped out, but managed to come up with $1 each to bet on this horse. Apparently we weren't completely convinced this horse was a winner, so we placed a $2 bet to "show".

He won! Our $2 bet would have made us $500 had we bet to win. As it was, we won $58 (?), which we split, which paid for our day with a little left over.

Now that I've jogged my memory, stand by for other stories from our adventures in NY. Here are a few headlines:

Doug and Bill hitchhike to Lake George Village and get picked up by some strange characters.
Doug and Bill are picked up by a sheriff's deputy.
Doug and Bill are confronted by a biker gang in Lake George Village.

Bill Koerner
[whom we hope will let us put all these great-sounding stories on the blog -- stay tuned!]

General Information and Schedule of Events

40th CLASS REUNION: June 20-22, 2008

The schedule for this past reunion has been posted on the Yahoo group/forum (see link with other links) for safe keeping.

We are discussing how long to maintain the blog and we are leaning towards doing so ad infinitum. The Yahoo group/forum will keep on keeping on so sign up and send in your thoughts, etc.

Also note that our reunion e-mail address is and will remain ghs68reunion@aol.com.

HOW TO ENJOY PRE-REUNION PHOTOS OF YOUR CLASSMATES (HELP FOR THE COMPUTER-CHALLENGED)! Go to the SLIDE SHOW at the top of the blog page to watch the photos. To control the slide show, place your cursor over the slide and use the pause, forward, and backward arrows that will appear. Double click the slide and you will be directed to the Picasa photo site. There you can see a larger version of the photo you clicked. Click VIEW ALBUM to enter the web album of all the pre-reunion photos we have placed in the blog. At that point, you may order any copies of the photos you would like to or watch, send photos to friends, or watch a full screen version of the slide show. Have fun.

When sending in electronic images, please identify who is in the picture and who is sending it. Many of us look exactly like we did in our youth, some of us do not so identification helps the blog maester. Some photo programs allow you to label or caption each shot to identify the people pictured. If you can do this before sending it in, it will save us time at this end.
